An Insight into 5th grade VolleyBall Assessments and Activities

Being an elementary physical education instructional assistant, I work with all grade levels from pre k to grade 5. Because of that each grade level has a different unit plan and a different standard. This is due to differences in maturity, muscle strength, coordination, flexibility, muscle endurance, height and weight. For this activity, my target will be grade 5 . I will be using the standard from SHAPE( Society of Health and Physical educators) which is America’s National PE standards to construct my unit plan.  More specifically, I will be using the following standard to develop my unit plan .

Standard : The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.

This standard in my opinion, is more tailor for upper elementary (grades 3 to 5) simply because they are more mature and physically more capable of applying knowledge learned to game situations.  I have used the standards from SHAPE because my school is international and its roots are heavily derived from the American educational system.

3 Proficiencies that will indicate what students should be able to due upon completion of this unit.

I will be creating a volleyball unit for this activity . By the end of the volleyball unit fifth graders should be able to :

1.     Serve the ball overhead to the other side of the net
2.     Preform a correct bump pass
3.     Perform a correct set pass

3 assessment tools to make sure students are meeting the standard

1.     Serving Assessment :

2.      Bump pass Assessment :

3.     Set Pass Assessment :

3 learning experiences or activities that will aid students develop the knowledge and skills to meet the standard.

  1.     For serving I will place hoola hoops on the other side of the net. Students must serve the ball over the net and attempt to make it bounce in the hoola hoop.  This activity will allow them to work on their technique, concentration and accuracy .

  2.     For bumping , I will toss the ball to the students and they need to bump it inside a basketball hoop. This will work on their technique , concentration and accuracy .

3.     For setting,  each student will be given a ball and they will need to set it to themselves while walking. After that is done, they need to set the ball inside a basketball hoop. This will develop their technique, concentration and accuracy .

These three activities will allow my fifth graders to apply the knowledge and skill they learned from the assessment rubric in order to be perform well and be successful in volley ball.
